Drottningholm Opera Festival 2011

One year of Mozart is definitely not enough, and I'm looking forward to a second Mozart summer in 2011. Not only will there be a revival of last year's highly acclaimed Don Giovanni, but also a new production of Così fan tutte.

In Don Giovanni, her third production for Drottningholm, director Johanna Garpe challenges many conventional assumptions about the opera. No young libertine, Don Giovanni (skilfully portrayed by Loa Falkman) is an aged aristocrat. With him we witness the end of an era, and at the same time experience the birth of a new generation armed with a revolutionary social agenda.

There is revolution of another kind in Così fan tutte, presented under the auspices of our Young Artists Programme, and in co-operation with the University College of Opera, Stockholm. Sigrid T'Hooft, renowned for her stylish historically-informed productions, will be making her début both at Drottningholm and as a director of Mozart opera. Inspired by acting and staging techniques contemporary with the opera, Sigrid T'Hooft will create a thoroughly believable 18th century world. Costumes will be designed by Stephan Dietrich and, as usual, sewn in our very own costume atelier at Drottningholm.

Mid August we are giving our audiences a chance to experience eighteenth century dance of international standing! The Compagnie l’Eventail, directed by choreographer Marie-Geneviève Massé, will be performing two dance productions during three guest appearances. The guest performances will form an inspiring close to this year’s festival.
