COSÌ FAN TUTTE ossia La scuola degli amanti
W A Mozart
In co-production with the University College of Opera in Stockholm
Première at Drottningholms Slottsteater 29 May at 16.00
- For our first production this Festival, I would like to introduce Belgian director Sigrid T'Hooft, artistic director Mark Tatlow says. Sigrid T’Hooft uses her rich knowledge of 18th-century theatre practice to create a tantalisingly witty staging of Mozart's comic masterpiece. An opera that never fails to spawn controversy, Così fan tutte, subtitled La scuola degli amanti (The school for lovers), challenges pre-conceived ideas about love and relationships, and leaves us with at least as many questions as it answers.
Sigrid T’Hooft: - The process of staging an opera as it was originally performed is similar to that of playing its music on early instruments, or singing the libretto as it was first sung: the director simply studies all the available information on how the opera was staged, sung and played at the time it was composed, and translates this into today’s practice. This does not mean ‘modernising’ the opera, nor trying to recreate the past ‘as it was’. Instead, it means taking the music and the libretto as they have come to us through the filter of time, and performing them with the conviction that sound and stage can come together to speak the same aesthetic and dramaturgical language. Of course, this is not the only way to perform, but it is one way. Such a staging can enhance all the inherent beauty and power of the piece. Any work of ephemeral art from the past – be it music, dance or opera – needs the present to bring it back to life.
We will meet a cast of young, talented singers in the beginning of their career. South African baritone Luthando Qave, who is attending Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan in New York, sings Guglielmo. - Luthando will make his début at the Met next year and might be one of the world’s most promising baritones, Mark Tatlow concludes.
