The European Route of Historic Theatres

The historic theatres in Europe are a special part of our common European cultural heritage.
In order to save this treasure for future generations PERSPECTIV—Association of Historic Theatres in Europe was set up in 2003. The members of the association are still existing historic theatres built between 1550 and around 1900.

To make it easier for you to visit the historic theatres, a new tourist itinerary is currently being developed, leading from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark across Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria into Italy, with an extension to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Great Britain.

This European Route of Historic Theatres connects the most interesting and best preserved theatres from the 16th to the 19th century. Thereby it makes this special part of our common European heritage more visible and accessible.

The European Route is divided into various part-routes. Each of these routes consists of up to 12 theatres that can be visited in about eight days. But you can also pick a few theatres and visit only two or three of them at a time, for example during a weekend. There is a German Route and a Nordic Route, and soon a Channel Route, an Italian Route and an Emperor Route will be presented.
The project is supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union.
